How to avoid the most common MOT fails

Often vehicles fail their MOT on simple things like faulty bulbs, illegal tyre tread or even empty windscreen washer fluid.

Here is how you can avoid those most common fails and stay safe on the road leading up to your MOT.

Lighting and signalling

Did you know that nearly 1/5 of all cars fail their MOTs due to issues with their lights.

We aren’t talking just about your headlight and break light bulbs working…

Are the plastic lenses that cover the lights clear and clean? Misty and dirty light covers can limit their effectiveness

Do your indicators flash as they should?

Don’t forget the rear number plate. Does the light work and clearly show your number plate in the dark?

Tyres

Tyres count for the fourth most common failure rate in an annual MOT test.

If the tyres are not up to scratch on the road, all the safety features in the world would not prevent a potential disaster you could have on your hands.

Make sure your tyre tread is no less than the minimum of 1.6mm.

Don’t just rely on the tread you can see, feel inside the tire for any uneven wear. Look out for any lumps, cuts, and indents. If you notice any of these then this should be changed straight away.

Issues affecting the driver’s view of the road

Things that can affect your view of the road/ blocking your windscreen range from aftermarket sat-navs, air fresheners, and cracks or chips in the drivers eyeline.

Do your windscreen whippers work correctly? If they create smearing on the windscreen then it may be time to clean or replace your whippers.

It is also worth topping up your windscreen washer fluid before your test, too.
