California 6.1 – first photos of striking new model

Added: 05 August 2019

The factory has released its first photos of the California 6.1, which show the new model’s redesigned front end, enhanced interior, and features including the digital control unit and improved sleeping areas.

The photos come just a few weeks after the model’s first sketches and details were released.

One of particularly striking feature of the California 6.1 is its front section. The top part of the Ocean’s chrome-plated radiator grille forms a single unit with new LED daytime running lights. A chrome strip also adorns the new bumper design.

The interior is also equipped with details such as a double USB socket, new aluminium handles on all doors and push buttons for opening the kitchen surface (sink, cooker, fridge). Sliding doors replace the shutters in the rear cupboard.

The high bed in the California 6.1 will come with a sprung base, while the double rear bench seat that folds out to create a bed can also be transformed into a lounge.

The pop-up roof’s canvas sides stop exterior light disturbing sleepy occupants. Waking up, meanwhile, is made particularly pleasant by a new sunrise function, which uses individually selectable LEDs in the roof and living area to slowly increase lighting levels to the desired level over a chosen length of time.

The sunrise function is controlled – like all main camper settings on the California 6.1 – using a newly developed control panel in the overhead console.

Electro-mechanical steering – as seen already on the Crafter – also lets customers choose options designed to make driving safer and easier; these are set to include driver assistance systems such as lane assist.

The California 6.1 will be launched with a range of highly efficient 2.0-litre turbodiesel engines, with power outputs of up to 199PS, and is set to make its world premiere at the end of August at the Caravan-Salon in Düsseldorf.

Exact UK specification and prices will be confirmed closer to its launch
